Cut to three years later, in 2006, where Malalai is running for Paliament in the first-ever free elections in Afghanistan history. Her life has been in danger since that day in 2003 and she has had to move constantly, never living in one place too long. Although she despises the traditional burka that women have been forced to wear for so long, she must wear it when she goes outside. Ironically that sign of oppression of women now serves to hide her from her enem
Like many films shown at Sundance this year, Towelhead combined different styles (humor and drama), but does it more successfully than most. It's the story of a thirteen year old girl who is half Lebanese / half WASP whose physical development is quite ahead of her age. Towelhead (aka Nothing is Private) was written, directed and produced by Alan Ball , the same fellow who wrote the screenplay for the similarly themed American Beauty a few years
There's not a clear front-runner in the awards season race (culminating with Oscar night) in 2016 like there has been in some years past, but Tom McCarthy's docudrama on the Boston Globe's investigation of the Catholic Church's sex abuse coverup has gained momentum of late. The HFPA's own Best Drama selections generally aren't too surprising (with recent winners including Boyhood and 12 Years a Slave ) and McCarthy's film boasts that perfect combination of topical subject matter and critical darling status that suggests it will take home the big prize (and maybe then some) at the Golden Glo
Some have taken issue with the idea that The Martian is a "comedy", but the good-humored tale of one astronaut's efforts to stay alive (while he's trapped and alone on the red planet) is one of 2015's most widely acclaimed movies, in addition to being a major commercial success (with a worldwide box office take that sits close to $600 million). Competition in the comedy category isn't as strong as the drama line-up either, which makes director Ridley Scott's space adventure the obvious pick to win here at the Golden Glo
There are several noteworthy performances in Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight , but the film once again demonstrates that there are few actors who know how to deliver Tarantino dialogue just right like Samuel L. Jackson does (for more proof of that, see that SLJ monologue from The Hateful Eigh
Yes, there is sex and nudity in the film, but it's used to hammer home the wrongness of what's going on. The way it's used makes the audience extremely uncomfortable in a good way. Of course we all know that what is happening in the film is wrong on an intellectual level, but this film festival games rankings|https://moviefestivalhub.com/ makes you see and feel the wrongness of it. You can't help but be affected by
Jason (our protagonist) is a good guy with a big heart who is a victim of circumstance. Raised by a father with a sadistic streak who left the family some time back, a somewhat clueless mother (seemingly irresponsible, but not in a malicious way) who doesn't seem to have a job and is depending on Jason working two jobs to keep them afloat. Unfortunately Jason's jobs are minimum wage at best and are not enough to meet the monthly bills, including the electricity bill in the middle of winter. His father has just committed suicide, and he leaves Jason a gift which goes unopened for most of the film. We learn that at age three the family learned that his sister had a sever peanut allergy, and that for her 10th birthday (if I recall correctly) dear old dad gave her an intricately wrapped package for her birthday that contained... a jar of peanut butter. That was dads idea of a joke. Therefore Jason's trepidation at opening a parting gift from his father is quite understanda
Matt Damon puts on a one-man show for nearly all of his scenes in The Martian and his charismatic performance as astronaut Mark Watney has already brought Damon more than his fair share of critical acclaim and accolades already. Damon, as mentioned before, is the one actor who looks to challenge DiCaprio for the Best Actor Oscar this year - but seeing as the pair are not competing directly against one another at the Golden Globes, it's hard to imagine Damon won't snag a globe at this awards s
The film opens with our protagonist walking towards a celebratory crowd of people with a gun in his hand, the narrative describing the physical effects of shooting oneself in the mouth. Right there you can be assured that this isn't going to be the "Feel Good Movie of the Year." We are informed that we are watching the end of the film, and it immediately cuts a
Technically, is The Good Life a great film? Based on the script and the performances I would have to say yes. Overall, for the average viewer, is it great ? I'd have to say no. At most I would call it a good mo
The film then goes to Sean (played by the up and coming Mark Webber) and his friends Jason and Chris. Chris tries to film everything ("I'm making a movie.") and is what I would call a dangerous geek. Dorky, can't get a girl, and drives around with a shotgun in back of his car in case he "wants to shoot someone". Jason is cocky and a tough guy, while Sean is just back from college, although he's easily sucked back into his friends' dead end lifest
