How to retrieve unsaved work in WPS Office following a crash
If you’ve ever been in the middle of typing an important document in WPS Office and suddenly experienced a crash or unexpected shutdown, you know how stressful it can be to lose unsaved work. Fortunately, WPS Office includes built-in recovery features designed to help you retrieve your lost content
The good news is that even if you didn’t manually save your file, there’s a strong chance you can recover it
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you recover unsaved WPS documents after a crash.
First, restart WPS Office. When you reopen the application, the Document Recovery window may open on its own
This panel appears on the left side of the screen and displays recently edited documents from before the shutdown
Look for your document in this list. If you see it, select the document to restore it
Once opened, export the file to a permanent folder to avoid further loss
If the Document Recovery panel does not appear automatically, you can trigger it manually
Open WPS Office and click on the File tab in the top left corner. From the menu, select Info. Then look for the option labeled Manage Document. select Recover Unsaved Documents from the submenu
This will open a folder containing temporary files that WPS created during your editing session. they may appear as cryptic filenames with timestamps or UUIDs
Browse through the list to find the most recent version of your unsaved work. Double-click the file to open it in WPS
Then save it properly using Save As to ensure permanence.
If you still can’t locate your document through the recovery panel, navigate to the unsaved files storage location
On Windows, navigate to the following directory: C:\Users\YourUsername\AppData\Local\Kingsoft\WPS Office\11\cache\unsaved. Replace YourUsername with your actual Windows username.
On macOS, go to ~/Library/Application Support/Kingsoft/WPS Office/11/cache/unsaved.
Inside this folder, you might see files ending in.tmp,.tmp~ or.tmp_autosave
Although these files are not immediately readable, you can try opening them with WPS Office
Launch the file through WPS Writer, Sheets, or Presentation based on its likely format
Another useful tip is to enable auto-recovery in advance for future protection. Access Settings via File > Options > Save
Make sure the option to AutoRecover is enabled at regular intervals
Set the interval to every 5 minutes for frequent saves
This ensures that even if you forget to save, WPS creates regular backups of your work.
It’s also a good idea to get into the habit of pressing Ctrl+S frequently while working
While the auto-recovery feature is powerful, manual saves provide the most reliable form of protection
Additionally, consider saving your documents to cloud platforms such as Google Drive or WPS’s own sync service, which offer past revisions and online backup if your device crashes
If none of these methods work, the file might be irreparably damaged
In such cases, consider using specialized data recovery tools for temporary WPS files
However, the longer you wait, the lower your chances of recovery become
Remember that proactive measures beat last-minute fixes
Make routine backups, activate auto-recovery, and update WPS to prevent future disasters
With these strategies, your documents will remain safe even after unexpected crashes
