Once you've gotten past the novelty of decorating your house with cactus furniture, there's really not a whole lot of charm to this open, largely bland dessert area; especially above ground. You don't often find many valuables here, and there aren't a wide variety of useful crafting materials, unless you're looking for a hefty supply of glass from s

demaged_old_house_ruins-1024x683.jpgThere's no plot to Terraria, but rather a situation. You're above ground and all this neat stuff is below it, so you need to harvest resources, create weapons and armor, build a house for the NPCs who will eventually wander by, and beat the living hell out of every monster, creature, beast, and boss in your way. The balance of combat to building to exploration is just right, leading you deeper and deeper into your unique procedurally-generated world.

This is an adaptation of a PC game, though, and the new format brings its share of gameplay tweaks, additions, and quirks. First and most notable is the addition of a map, which is a feature the original version desperately needs added. As you explore deep into the earth and the caverns get more and more complicated, it's very easy to get completely lost. A few runs from surface to the depths will imprint the course in memory, but in the meantime Death By Monster in an obscure side-cavern that looked like the way home was a little too frequent. Fortunately this only meant the loss of some money, and you wake up safe in bed to try again, but a simple map would have helped avoid the whole issue. Now we've got one and it's a definite improvement to the game, although it has a tendency to show areas that are a little bit beyond where the light from your torches can reach. On the one hand the map's extra view distance feels like cheating, while on the other every little bit helps.

Though scary, the Wall of Flesh is not as bad as it seems. For this boss, either you build a bridge and it's not even worthy of a fight, or you don't build a bridge and it's a chaotic nightmare. The bridge will help you move across the Underworld without falling into Lava. While on the bridge, you can turn and shoot the Wall of Flesh, chipping away at its hea

Even if Terraria may be deceptively straightforward to begin with, this side-scroller changes so drastically over the course of a dozen hours, it is almost inconceivable that they are part of the same game. The players first night may be spent digging stone and fighting zombies off with a spear, but before long the same character is leaping into battle with a massive boss Skeletron, aided by ridiculous armor and rocket boots, all whilst wielding a sword straight out of a sci-fi no

The Wall of Flesh is the final and strongest pre-Hardmode boss. Once it is defeated, the world will then convert to Hardmode. In order to defeat this boss, you will need to attack the eyes or mo

A personal favorite of this writer - the Mushroom biome offers a neat visual display, a uniquely awesome retro-style soundtrack, and a plethora of cool mushroom-themed items to gather. This area really has an authentic atmosphere, with its crazy music and its glowing, vibrant aesthetic that's easy to get lost in - both figuratively and litera

Should the player follow the fairy, it will lead them to a nearby source of treasure. The exact specifics on what each of the three fairies in Terraria do different from each other is as of yet unknown, but all three are beneficial and can help the player get some neat it

The first thing that must be explained before delving into the type of game that Terraria is and is not is where the comparison to Minecraft are justified, and where they imply similarities that in truth, are exaggerated. Yes, players are unable to progress without spending their time mining elements and materials, and yes, those materials are intended to be crafted into items and weapons. But with an actual implied progressions, end goal, and increasingly difficult enemy encounters, Terraria falls more securely into the 'game' category than Minecraft ever co
