PlayStation’s focus on a handful of games for E3 2018 was well-known weeks before they held their press conference. With rumors swirling about a potential PlayStation 5 on the horizon, it was apparent that the platform holder would focus on its current crop of announced titles. The Last of Us Part II and Spider-Man are proven winners, and Death Standing continued to intrigue. Ghost of Tsushima, however, was perhaps the most interesting title. A far cry from Sucker Punch’s previous work, Ghost of Tsushima made its presence known at the show and stunned in its debut.

From a gameplay perspective, Ghost of Tsushima is a departure from the Infamous franchise. While those games were all about continuously moving around the battlefield, Ghost of Tsushima is more about studying enemy movement, parrying and attacking when finding an opening. Melee combat becomes more nuanced when fighting 1v1, as shown in the final fight with his fallen comrade, Masako. Sucker Punch commented that they’re pulling heavily from Japanese cinema like Yojimbo for the combat. Unfortunately, the HUD was turned making it difficult to determine how exactly the game plays. When confronted, Sucker Punch didn’t explicitly compare combat to any other game on the market but did admit it has elements similar to the Batman Arkham and Middle-earth games.

This year’s E3 is mere days away, as developers and publishers gear up for an onslaught of reveals, trailers and gameplay demos for a massive lineup of games with enough variety to get gamers of any flavor hyped for the near and far future of releases. Even with a smaller amount of press conferences than usual, E3 2019 is still set to be the biggest week in gaming news this year, but that doesn’t mean every big title is going to get a chance to shine in the spotlight just yet. To set the expectations of fans correctly, developers have recently begun to be more forward as to exactly which previously announced titles will be foregoing the E3 press conferences and show floor for various reasons and below is an up-to-date list on which titles not to expect at E3 2019.

Originally revealed at last year's Paris Games Week press conference , Ghost of Tsushima is a brand new property from Sucker Punch Productions. The first-party Sony studio is best known for their work on the Sly Cooper and inFAMOUS series, and the developer most recently released inFAMOUS Second Son and inFAMOUS First Light back in 2014. I'm also hoping Ghost of Tsushima will take full advantage of an "M" rating. There's something that's oddly satisfying about the arsenal of a samurai, and I'm hoping that Sucker Punch will give players lots of weaponry and tools that'll result in absolute carnage. After all, the katana is one of history's most beautiful weapons, so I hope to see it put to good use in Ghost of Tsush

We got to sit down with Sucker Punch Productions to see Ghost of Tsushima up close. Though it was the same demo shown at the conference, we did learn important new details. The game takes place in 1274 during the Mongols’ invasions of the island of Tsushima. You play as Jin Sekai, the last living samurai on the island. Having lost everything to the Mongols, Jin now fights for the common people as he tries to stave off the invasion.

The second of EA’s promised upcoming releases is "a new title in our Plants vs. Zombies shooter franchise," which seemingly indicates a third Garden Warfare set to launch sometime in the next nine months. While there has not been an official confirmation that this title will not be shown at E3 2019 in some capacity, EA’s abandoning of their usual press conference and the title’s lack of inclusion in the EA Play streaming schedule all but establishes that their latest class-based shooter is not ready for primetime just yet.

Back in January, Nintendo shared an update on the return of the Metroid Prime franchise for the first time since its brief announcement at E3 2017, sharing that Bandai Namco would no longer be working on the fourth entry and that development of the latest entry would be fully restarted and instead handled by the series’ original owners, Retro Studios. Although Nintendo has not directly stated that Metroid Prime 4 will not show up at E3 this year, the publisher’s usual preference for focusing on titles releasing in the same year, alongside the development of the title having only truly started less than five months ago, seems to indicate that the chances of the sci-fi shooter appearing at this year’s E3 are slim to none.

After an extensive gameplay demo during last year’s Ubisoft E3 briefing, there was a sense of momentum building towards this year’s showing that the multiplayer piracy title would get plenty of new information and footage as it prepared for launch later this year. That was, until last month, when Skull and Bones received its second delay in as many years and the French publisher confirmed that they would not be bringing the title to E3 Read This method year to allow the team to continue working hard on the project.
