When she gets back home to the run-down shack where she and her father live, he is hanging all over Robin Wright Penn (whose character name I don't recall) and is apparently a new girlfriend. Lewellan is a huge Elvis fan and she loves to sing his hit song "Hounddog" in particular. What is unsettling about that is that when she sings and really gets into the song she tries to gyrate like Elvis in a very provacative manner, sometimes moving like a dancer from a strip club. Seeing an undeveloped 12 year old moving like that is just plain cre
I really believe that director Deborah Kampmeier was earnestly trying to bring attention to the subject of sexual abuse of children, but I don't think showing a 12 year old girl acting seductively and peppering the film with scenes of her in her underwear was the way to go about
It remains to be seen if this is something that will plague the Oscars for the next handful of years or is merely a blip on the radar. Looking ahead to 2015's award season (I know, bear with me...), there are offerings from filmmakers including Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino, and David O. Russell among others that could prove to be more lucrative endeavors than the crop we just got. The Academy will spend the next 12 months figuring out how to retool their telecast, but the odds of a ratings boost are in their fa
Nevertheless, we'll take a shot at guessing who and what will take which awards - using a very un-scientific and more than a little subjective method - while at the same time offering some thoughts on who (and what films) should be recognized at the 2016 Golden Glo
You have to love the Golden Globes for putting Flesh and Bone in this category and doing so with a straight face. Nevertheless, that shouldn't detract from the fact that Fargo was one of the best shows on TV this year and, like Transparent, also took home the award for which it was nominated last year. Expect to see Hawley's smiling face – and possibly his sockless feet – on stage come Sun
Spotlight , as mentioned before, is the current front-runner in the Best Drama category - and though the film is well-directed, arguably the screenwriting and performances are its strongest elements. Both Sorkin and Tarantino are revered screenwriters who have been honored by the HFPA in the past and in turn present strong competition, but neither Steve Jobs nor Hateful Eight are widely regarded as being as inventive from a storytelling perspective as some of their previous w
Martin Scorsese's Hugo led the way with eleven nominations, stacking up many a nod in the technical categories, while Michel Hazanavicius' The Artist was close behind with ten total. Academy members clearly love a good homage to the magic of old-fashioned cinema - be it a Hollywood flick set in Paris or a French production set in Hollywood. Moving o
The stage at the back of the audience was utilized for the geeky cool actors to present the ten best pic nominees throughout the evening. They included Ryan Reynolds, Chris Pine, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeff Bridges, Charlize Theron and Keanu Ree
All in all, the event was solid for an industry awards presentation but to the viewers at home, it wasn't that exciting or up beat. There were a lot of good movies to choose from this year and I think we all would of liked to see Quentin Tarantino and his Inglourious Basterds get a little more cre
Looking at the nominees and the Globes' recent history in the category, it might actually be Bloom's time to shine. The Globes rightly took The CW seriously before anyone else did, and they might do it again, this time spreading the love around to a show that not only deserves it, but could also use the expos
Transparent took home this award last year, and there's no reason to think the show isn't coming to the Beverly Hilton for seconds. The series was simply a marvel in its second season, rising above the heights of its first in many ways as the storytelling moved into a wonderful visual rhythm that was kicked off with a killer static shot. Jill Soloway and the rest of the Transparent crew will be likely be making an appearance on stage Sunday ni
And, honestly, it's difficult to say what exactly can be done to fix this. The obvious answer is "nominate films people have seen," but that is a little disingenuous to the acclaimed movies that did get nominated. Whiplash , Boyhood , Birdman , and The Grand Budapest Hotel may not have become mainstream hits, but they all have their passionate supporters among cinephiles and received a boost in awareness thanks to the Oscar label. Maybe if studios made these awards contenders more readily available , they'd attract a wider audie
Hounddog suffers from something I've noticed in some other indie films: It's boring and it's too long. Although it's filled with gorgeous scenery, the film just seems to go on and on and on. This was yet another hour and a half long Movie awards games achievements|https://moviefestivalhub.com/ that felt twice as long. The best thing about the film is Dakota Fanning's performance. She really is amazing at the range and subtlety of emotion she can convey at such a young age. I only hope that she is one of the very few child actors who survives the transition to adulthood unscat
